本校は、明治6年に日本初の国立の師範学校の練習小学校として設立され、児童の心身の発達に応じて義務教育としての普通教育を行っている。その使命は、筑波大学の附属小学校となった今でも、初等教育の理論と実践の研究校として受け継がれている。その成果は、国内外から訪れる年間1万人以上の公立学校教師をはじめとする教育関係者に供されている。

The school was established in 1873 as Japan’s first national primary school of practice for teachers, providing compulsory general education according to the physical and mental development of the children. Its mission has been carried on as a research school for the theory and practice of elementary education, even now that it has become a primary school attached to the University of Tsukuba. The results of this work are made available to more than 10,000 public school teachers and other educators from Japan and abroad who visit the school annually.
